Verbal: build meaning from context

Track logical relationships and the author’s position. Use vocabulary as part of the reasoning, not as a substitute for reading the sentence.

Watch for constraints, special cases and comparisons that change under different values. A small counterexample can save a long calculation.

The GRE General Test is the graduate and business-school admissions test run by ETS, offered year-round at more than 1,000 test centres in over 160 countries and at home. Since 22 September 2023 it is a shorter test of about 1 hour 58 minutes with one essay and section-adaptive Verbal and Quantitative sections.

GRE: common questions

What is the GRE format now?

Since 22 September 2023 the GRE General Test takes about 1 hour 58 minutes: one Analytical Writing task of 30 minutes, then two Verbal sections of 12 and 15 questions in 18 and 23 minutes and two Quantitative sections of 12 and 15 questions in 21 and 26 minutes, in any order. Verbal and Quant are section-adaptive.

How much does the GRE cost in 2026?

ETS lists US$249 in its global table and US$237.86 for China, effective 1 August 2026. Rescheduling is US$55, or US$55.43 in China. The page directs candidates testing in India to ETS India, so confirm India pricing and payment terms there rather than treating the global table as an India quote.

How is the GRE scored, and is there negative marking?

Verbal and Quantitative are each reported on a 130 to 170 scale in one-point steps and Analytical Writing on 0 to 6 in half-point steps. You can mark, review and change answers within a section and ETS describes no penalty for wrong answers, so attempt every question. Official scores arrive 8 to 10 days after the test.

How many times can I take the GRE and how long are scores valid?

Once every 21 days and at most five times in any rolling 12-month period, whether at a centre or at home. Scores remain reportable for five years from the test date, and you choose which scores to send to each programme.

Can I take the GRE at home in India?

ETS offers the General Test at more than 1,000 test centres in over 160 countries and at home, with appointments available year-round. The at-home test uses the same format, timing and scoring as the centre version. ID requirements differ by country and citizenship, so check ETS's ID page before booking.

What changed in the shorter GRE?

The pre-September-2023 test had two essays, an unscored section and a break and ran about 3 hours 45 minutes. The current test has one essay, no unscored section, no break and about 1 hour 58 minutes, with the same 130 to 170 and 0 to 6 scales, so old and new scores are comparable.

Is there a free GRE practice test on Myndaq?

Yes, one attempt per account and no card. It is 54 questions across two Verbal and two Quantitative sections at the real timings of 18, 21, 23 and 26 minutes. It does not include the essay, is not section-adaptive and reports raw marks per section rather than a 130 to 170 estimate; ETS's POWERPREP tests are also free. See free mock tests →
