ACT: common questions

What is the ACT format now?

English has 50 questions in 35 minutes, Math 45 in 50 minutes and Reading 36 in 40 minutes; Science, 40 questions in 40 minutes, and Writing, one essay in 40 minutes, are optional. Each section includes some unscored field-test questions. The core three sections take 125 minutes of testing time; adding Science makes it 165.

How is the ACT Composite calculated?

Each section is scored from 1 to 36 and the Composite is the average of your English, Math and Reading scores rounded to the nearest whole number. Science is reported separately and feeds a STEM score; Writing is scored 2 to 12 and does not affect the Composite. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question.

Do I need to take the Science section?

Not for the Composite, which uses only English, Math and Reading. Science is an optional add-on; whether you need it depends on the colleges and programmes you apply to, some of which ask for it or for a STEM score. Check each institution's testing page before you register.

How much does the ACT cost?

On ACT's US price list the core test is US$70, the Science add-on US$5 and the Writing add-on US$25, or US$100 for all three. Late registration costs US$42 and a test date, form or centre change US$49. Students testing outside the United States pay an additional non-US testing fee shown at registration.

When can I take the ACT outside the US in 2026–27?

ACT's international dates are 5 September 2026, 23–24 October, 11–12 December, 12–13 February 2027, 2–3 April, 11–12 June and 9–10 July. Regular registration closes about four weeks before each date and late registration about two weeks before.
