The MCAT is the AAMC's admissions test for medical schools in the United States and Canada, delivered by Pearson VUE in January and from March to September at sites worldwide. It is a fixed-form, computer-based test of 230 questions in four sections with about 7 hours 30 minutes in the seat.

MCAT: common questions

How many questions are on the MCAT and how long is it?

230 questions across four sections: 59 in Chemical and Physical Foundations in 95 minutes, 53 in Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills in 90 minutes, 59 in Biological and Biochemical Foundations in 95 minutes and 59 in Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations in 95 minutes. Content time is 6 hours 15 minutes; with breaks you are seated about 7 hours 30 minutes.

Does the MCAT have negative marking?

No. AAMC states that wrong answers are scored exactly the same as unanswered questions, so never leave a blank. Each section's number of correct answers converts to a scaled score from 118 to 132 through equating, and the total runs from 472 to 528 with 500 as the midpoint.

What is the MCAT registration fee?

For 2027 testing, AAMC lists US$360 standard registration, US$145 with approved Fee Assistance, and a US$130 international surcharge outside the US, Canada and US territories. The standard total with that surcharge is US$490 before applicable taxes. Confirm your actual test location and checkout total.

How does MCAT regional registration opening work?

AAMC opens booking by test-centre location group at noon Eastern Time. Waiting-room queue assignment is earlier and does not mean booking has opened. Check your group on the official registration page and obtain Fee Assistance approval before booking if you plan to use the discounted fee.

When do MCAT scores come out?

AAMC scales and equates each administration after test day, which takes 30 to 35 days, and then releases scores in the MCAT Score Reporting System. Because the exam is equated rather than curved, testing in a supposedly harder month neither helps nor hurts your scaled score.

Is the MCAT computer-adaptive?

No. It is a fixed-form, computer-based test: every candidate on a given form sees the same set of scored items plus some unscored field-test items. Differences in difficulty between forms are handled afterwards by equating, not by adapting question difficulty while you test.
