Marks = correct marks − MCQ penalties, out of 100 across 65 questions. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs 1/3, a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs 2/3; MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking (an MSQ scores only when every correct choice is selected).
18 correct 1-mark MCQs, 6 wrong 1-mark MCQs, 12 correct 2-mark MCQs, 4 wrong 2-mark MCQs, and 8 correct 2-mark MSQ/NAT: positives = 18 + 24 + 16 = 58; penalties = 6 × 1/3 + 4 × 2/3 = 2 + 2.67 = 4.67 → 53.33 / 100.
This computes your raw MARKS out of 100. Your GATE SCORE out of 1000 is a separate normalized number derived from marks (the URL says “score calculator” for search familiarity; the maths here is the marks calculation).
Multi-session papers are normalized so no session is advantaged, then mapped to a 0–1000 score used for admissions and PSU recruitment. Same marks can give different scores in different years.
