How the real GRE is scored
Scored on three separate scales. Verbal Reasoning 130-170 and Quantitative Reasoning 130-170 are reported in 1-point increments; Analytical Writing is scored 0-6 in half-point increments. There is no official total — V and Q add up to 260-340. Strong scores depend heavily on programme and country.
- 310-319Competitive at most well-regarded graduate programmes worldwide. Comfortable range for mid-tier and applied-science master's programmes.
- 300-309Average to good for many graduate programmes. Sufficient for a wide range of admissions, especially when paired with strong academics and experience.
- AW 4.5+Strong writing band, valued for humanities, social-science and policy programmes. AW 3.5-4.0 is acceptable at most STEM programmes.

What the GRE asks of you
The GRE General Test is the world's most widely accepted standardized exam for graduate, MBA, specialised master's and law admissions. Owned and administered by ETS, it tests Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing on a single 1h 58m computer-based test, taken year-round at 1,000+ test centres across 160+ countries or at home with live proctoring. Scores are accepted by graduate programmes globally and are valid for five years.
Five sections in a fixed order — Analytical Writing first, then Verbal and Quantitative alternating. Analytical Writing is one Analyze-an-Issue essay (30 min). Verbal Reasoning has two sections — 12 questions in 18 min, then 15 in 23 min — testing text completion, sentence equivalence and reading comprehension. Quantitative Reasoning has two sections — 12 questions in 21 min, then 15 in 26 min — covering arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. An on-screen four-function calculator with square root is provided for Quant only. The test is section-level adaptive — performance on the first Verbal/Quant section sets the difficulty of the second.
