How the overall band is calculated

Overall band = mean of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band — a mean ending in .25 rounds up to the half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Listening and Reading bands come from your raw score out of 40 (tables above); Writing and Speaking are examiner-assessed on four criteria each.

Worked example

Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.5, Speaking 7.0 → mean = 25.5 ÷ 4 = 6.375 → rounds up to overall band 6.5.

FAQs

Are the Listening and Reading tables the same for Academic and General Training?

Listening uses one table for both. Reading differs — the Academic and General Training papers have different raw-to-band conversions. The Reading table on this page is the Academic one.

Can I score half bands in Writing and Speaking?

Yes. All four skills are reported in whole and half bands (e.g. 6.0, 6.5), and the overall band is also a whole or half band.

How is the overall IELTS band calculated?

The overall band is the mean of the four skill bands rounded to the nearest half band — a mean ending in .25 rounds up to the half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

How long are IELTS results valid?

The IELTS partners recommend treating a Test Report Form as valid for two years; individual universities and immigration authorities set their own rules.

Is the conversion here exact?

It uses the published band-table midlines. Real test versions are equated, so a given band can shift by about a mark either way between versions.
