GRE Preparation Guide - Current Format, Scores and Study Plan

Prepare for the GRE General Test with verified format and scoring, section methods, an evidence-led study plan and booking checklist.

The GRE General Test measures Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, critical thinking and Analytical Writing. Its shorter current format still demands several different processes: vocabulary in context, passage analysis, mathematical modelling, section-level adaptation and a timed argument essay.

What the GRE is for and who should take it

ETS positions the GRE General Test for graduate, business and law-school applications. It measures skills developed over time rather than specialist knowledge from one academic discipline.

The GRE is not:

  • a graduate programme entrance requirement everywhere;
  • a test of subject expertise in your intended major;
  • an English-language proficiency test;
  • an admission decision or scholarship guarantee; or
  • evidence that one score is competitive across all fields and institutions.

Each programme decides whether it requires, accepts, recommends or does not use GRE scores. Before registering, check the current policy for every intended programme, including accepted test dates, score-reporting instructions and any separate language requirement.

The general registration page offers test-centre and at-home delivery where available. Identity, location and equipment rules apply to the delivery option. Programme eligibility and test-registration eligibility are separate questions: being able to register for the GRE does not establish eligibility for a degree programme.

Current GRE General Test format

The current computer-delivered GRE General Test takes about 1 hour 58 minutes and has five sections:

  • Analytical Writing: one Analyze an Issue task, 30 minutes;
  • Verbal Reasoning section 1: 12 questions, 18 minutes;
  • Verbal Reasoning section 2: 15 questions, 23 minutes;
  • Quantitative Reasoning section 1: 12 questions, 21 minutes;
  • Quantitative Reasoning section 2: 15 questions, 26 minutes.

Analytical Writing is always first. The Verbal and Quantitative sections may appear in either order afterwards.

Within a section, the computer interface lets you skip questions, mark them for review, return to them and change answers while time remains. An on-screen calculator is available for Quantitative Reasoning.

Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning are section-level adaptive. The first section of each measure is of average difficulty. Performance across that first section influences the difficulty of the second section for the same measure. The adaptation occurs between sections, not question by question, so you can move freely within the active section.

How GRE scores and results work

The GRE reports three scores:

  • Verbal Reasoning: 130–170 in one-point increments;
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 130–170 in one-point increments;
  • Analytical Writing: 0–6 in half-point increments.

There is no single official combined score that adds all three measures. Programmes may interpret the measures differently according to field and admissions policy.

For Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning, the raw score is the number of correct responses across the operational sections of that measure. ETS converts the raw score through equating, accounting for small differences among test editions and the difficulty introduced by section-level adaptation.

Analytical Writing is scored holistically for the overall quality of the response to the assigned task. ETS states that the essay receives human and e-rater input under its scoring process, and one Analytical Writing score is reported.

The official score report contains measure scores and percentile ranks. A percentile is the percentage of the comparison group scoring below a given result; it is not a percentage-correct figure. Interpret the three measures in the context of the intended programme and field rather than applying one universal “good GRE score”.

Official result versus a practice estimate

Only ETS issues an official GRE score report. A practice test can estimate Verbal and Quantitative performance, but a simple raw-to-scaled table may not reproduce section-level routing and equating. An essay score from a teacher, rubric or automated tool is feedback, not an official Analytical Writing score.

Use practice estimates as ranges and diagnostic evidence:

  • compare several current, timed attempts;
  • keep Verbal, Quantitative and Writing evidence separate;
  • note the second-section difficulty and performance;
  • track unanswered or rushed questions;
  • compare score ranges with programme-specific expectations; and
  • expect normal variation across question mixes and test days.

A single high estimate should not override a wider pattern of unstable sections.

What Verbal Reasoning covers

ETS says Verbal Reasoning measures the ability to analyse and draw conclusions from discourse, reason from incomplete data, identify assumptions and perspectives, distinguish important from irrelevant points, understand text structure and interpret relationships among words and concepts.

The main question families are:

  • Reading Comprehension: understand, infer from and evaluate passages;
  • Text Completion: use sentence or passage logic to fill one or more blanks;
  • Sentence Equivalence: choose two options that complete the sentence with equivalent overall meaning.

Vocabulary matters, but isolated word lists are not enough. The tested decision is usually which meaning fits the sentence, contrast, support, tone or argument.

What Quantitative Reasoning covers

Quantitative Reasoning tests arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis at an elementary level, together with the ability to interpret quantitative information, model relationships and solve problems.

Question formats include:

  • Quantitative Comparison;
  • multiple choice with one answer;
  • multiple choice with one or more answers;
  • Numeric Entry; and
  • Data Interpretation sets.

The on-screen calculator is useful for arithmetic, but it does not choose an equation, identify a hidden constraint or decide whether exact calculation is necessary. Strong preparation combines concepts with estimation, algebraic structure, diagrams, unit checks and testing values.

What Analytical Writing covers

The current test begins with one Analyze an Issue task. ETS assesses the ability to articulate complex ideas, support them with relevant reasons and examples, sustain a focused and coherent discussion, and control written English.

Preparation should focus on:

  • interpreting the exact claim and instruction;
  • choosing a qualified, defensible position;
  • organising reasons around a clear thesis;
  • developing examples as evidence rather than decoration;
  • considering a limitation or counterpoint; and
  • reserving time to improve clarity and logic.

Do not prepare an Analyze an Argument task for the current General Test. That belonged to the longer pre-22 September 2023 structure.

Start with an evidence-led diagnostic

Use a current official practice test and reproduce the section limits. After each section, record more than the scaled estimate.

For Verbal:

  • accuracy by Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence;
  • vocabulary-in-context failures;
  • unsupported inferences;
  • passage-navigation problems; and
  • late-section guesses.

For Quantitative:

  • accuracy by content area and question format;
  • concept, setup and arithmetic errors;
  • calculator use;
  • missed constraints; and
  • response-time distribution.

For Writing:

  • whether the thesis answers the exact issue;
  • quality of reasons and examples;
  • paragraph progression;
  • treatment of complexity;
  • sentence control; and
  • completion within 30 minutes.

Also record confidence. A confident wrong answer often reveals a misconception; a correct guess reveals a process that may not transfer.

Build an evidence-led study plan

Phase one - repair foundations

Build a content map from diagnostic evidence. For Quantitative Reasoning, revisit only the arithmetic, algebra, geometry or data-analysis foundations causing errors. For Verbal Reasoning, combine vocabulary study with sentence logic and passage evidence. For Writing, learn the official task and score-level descriptions.

Phase two - drill by decision type

Use small untimed sets. For each question, state why the credited answer is supported and why the closest distractor fails. For essays, practise thesis-and-outline drills before writing more full responses.

Phase three - add spaced retrieval

Revisit vocabulary, formulas, common reasoning structures and previous errors after a delay. Retrieval without notes gives better evidence than rereading.

Phase four - mix topics and question types

Mixed sets force method selection. Start timing them while retaining full review. If speed rises but the same error type recurs, the plan is measuring the problem rather than correcting it.

Phase five - train complete sections

Practise 18- and 23-minute Verbal sections and 21- and 26-minute Quantitative sections. Develop checkpoints from your own data. Rehearse marking and returning to questions instead of letting one item consume the section.

Phase six - simulate the full sequence

Begin with the 30-minute essay, then complete all four reasoning sections in variable order. Use the current interface and allowed tools. Review the simulation in a separate session before deciding what to practise next.

Use a question and error-review method

Verbal review

For passage questions:

  1. State the main point and paragraph roles.
  2. Identify whose view the question concerns.
  3. Locate the sentence or relationship that supports the answer.
  4. Test option strength and scope.
  5. Explain why the chosen distractor fails.

For Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence:

  1. Ignore the options initially.
  2. Identify support, contrast and tone clues.
  3. Predict the required meaning.
  4. Test grammar and logic after inserting the option.
  5. For Sentence Equivalence, confirm that the selected pair creates equivalent sentence meanings, not merely that the two words resemble each other.

Quantitative review

  1. Restate the target and constraints.
  2. Choose a representation: equation, diagram, table, cases or estimation.
  3. Solve and check signs, units and domains.
  4. Test whether another valid case changes the answer.
  5. Find a faster route only after the original reasoning is sound.

For Quantitative Comparison, actively test equality and boundary cases. For Numeric Entry, check the required format. For multiple-answer questions, evaluate every option.

Writing review

Read the response once for argument and once for language. Mark:

  • thesis clarity;
  • relevance of each paragraph;
  • development of reasons;
  • examples connected to claims;
  • qualification or counterargument;
  • transitions; and
  • repeated sentence-level errors.

Rewrite the weakest paragraph, then write a new essay later. Editing the old response tests revision; a new task tests transfer.

Use precise failure labels such as vocabulary-in-context, unsupported inference, algebra setup, hidden constraint, calculator overuse, prompt misread or pacing.

Decide when you are ready

Readiness is supported by:

  • stable Verbal and Quantitative ranges across current official practice;
  • completed sections without uncontrolled rushing;
  • a declining recurrence rate for major error categories;
  • comfort with section-level adaptation and within-section navigation;
  • at least several 30-minute issue essays reviewed against the official criteria;
  • a full-sequence rehearsal beginning with Writing;
  • programme-specific score objectives for each measure; and
  • familiarity with the test-centre or at-home rules you booked.

If one measure is already above the range relevant to your programmes while another remains unstable, allocate study time by evidence rather than splitting it equally.

Booking and test-day checklist

  • Confirm that every intended programme currently accepts or requires the GRE.
  • Check programme deadlines and allow for the official reporting process stated by ETS.
  • Create the ETS account with the name and biographical details required by the ID policy.
  • Choose test-centre or at-home delivery based on current local availability and your testing conditions.
  • Review ID requirements for both the testing location and country of citizenship.
  • If testing at home, complete the current equipment check and room requirements before booking.
  • If requesting accommodations, follow the ETS approval and registration process before scheduling.
  • Confirm the appointment time, time zone, location and arrival or check-in instructions.
  • Practise with the current section timing, on-screen calculator and mark-and-review tools.
  • Read the current Information Bulletin and appointment confirmation shortly before test day.
  • Keep score-recipient decisions tied to each programme's current instructions.

No. Practice can estimate performance and identify weaknesses. Only ETS issues official Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing scores.
