The GRE General Test has one of the simplest fee structures of any admissions test: one price for almost the whole world, a short list of service charges, and a single cut-off that decides whether you get half your money back. The test fee
From 1 August 2026, ETS's fees page lists the GRE General Test at:
- US$249 — all areas of the world except China
- US$231.30 — China
There is no separate India price on that page; candidates in India pay the US$249 fee. ETS's Bulletin says test and test-related fees are inclusive of sales, use, value-added or similar taxes, except in a listed set of jurisdictions (Australia, Canada, the United States and others) where tax is added at checkout; India is not on that list. The Bulletin also states that the final charge includes a non-refundable 4% online service fee.

Fee Reduction Program. Eligible candidates can take the General Test with a fee reduction voucher for US$100.
Registering
- The test runs year-round, at more than 1,000 test centres in more than 160 countries, or at home.
- The Bulletin advises registering at least two business days before your preferred test date.
- ID requirements vary by where you test and your country of citizenship. Check ETS's ID page before booking and register with the name exactly as it appears on that ID.
Rescheduling and cancelling: the 4-day rule
The Bulletin sets one deadline for both:
- Reschedule or cancel no later than four days before your test date (10 days in mainland China). ETS's example: for a Saturday appointment in the United States, the deadline is Tuesday.
- Reschedule after that deadline and the test fee is forfeited. Rescheduling within the deadline carries the US$55 fee.
- Cancel by the deadline and you automatically receive a refund equal to half of the test fee. ETS keeps the rest to cover processing and holding your place.
- Appointments cannot be rescheduled more than one year beyond the original date.
- Refunds go back in the same currency to the original payment method; cash refunds are not available. There are no refunds on additional services or service fees, or on registrations paid with a voucher bought from a third party (Fee Reduction Program vouchers excepted), and none if you did not follow registration procedures or did not bring the required ID.
- If a technical problem at the test centre forces ETS to cancel your session, you are offered a free new appointment or a full refund.

Score reports and ScoreSelect
- Four free score recipients. After viewing your unofficial Verbal and Quant scores at the end of the test, you can name up to four recipients free of charge. After that, each report costs US$40.
- ScoreSelect lets you choose which scores to send: your most recent, or all of them. Scores are reported to institutions only at your request.
- Cancelling scores: at the end of the test you choose to report or cancel. Reported scores cannot later be cancelled. Cancelled scores can be reinstated for the US$50 fee.
- Timing and validity: official scores reach your ETS account 8 to 10 days after the test and remain reportable for five years.
Retaking
You can take the GRE General Test once every 21 days, up to five times in any continuous rolling 12-month period (365 days). Because ScoreSelect lets you choose which attempt to send, a retake does not expose a weaker earlier score to your programmes — but each attempt is a full US$249.
