Four modules — pass them your way
The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 tests four modules: Lesen (65 minutes), Hören (about 40 minutes), Schreiben (60 minutes) and Sprechen (about 15 minutes, taken in pairs). Each module is scored out of 100 and passes at 60/100 — and unlike almost every other major exam, the modules can be taken and retaken INDIVIDUALLY. Fail one, retake one. The certificate never expires, and it is the standard evidence of B1 German for visa and citizenship paths and for vocational study.

Goethe B1, answered
What score do I need to pass Goethe B1?
Each of the four modules — Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen — is scored out of 100, and each passes independently at 60/100. There is no combined total to chase: you clear every module's own bar.
Can I take the modules individually?
Yes — that flexibility is unique to the Goethe-Zertifikat B1. You can book all four modules in one sitting or take them one at a time, and if you miss one, you retake ONLY that module, not the whole exam.
Does the Goethe-Zertifikat expire?
No — the certificate does not expire. You earn it once and it remains valid evidence of your German for life.
What is Goethe B1 accepted for?
The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is the standard evidence of B1 German for visa and citizenship paths and for vocational study — the level German authorities and vocational institutions most commonly ask for.
What are the four modules and how long are they?
Lesen (reading, 65 minutes), Hören (listening, about 40 minutes), Schreiben (writing, 60 minutes) and Sprechen (speaking, about 15 minutes, taken in pairs). Each is scored out of 100 with a 60/100 pass mark.
