Goethe-Zertifikat B1: common questions

How many points do I need to pass Goethe B1?

Each of the four modules is scored out of 100 and is passed with at least 60 points. There is no compensation between modules, so 95 in Lesen does not rescue 55 in Schreiben. Grades run from ausreichend at 60 to 69 points up to sehr gut at 90 to 100.

Can I take the Goethe B1 modules separately?

Yes. Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen can be taken individually or together, and four module certificates are equivalent to the full certificate. Failed modules can be repeated as often as you like, and each module has its own fee, €104 at Goethe-Institut centres in Germany in 2026.

How long is the Goethe B1 exam?

Reading takes 65 minutes, Listening about 40, Writing 60 and Speaking about 15 minutes as a paired oral, roughly three hours in total. The oral is usually on the same day or an adjacent day depending on the centre's schedule.

Goethe B1 or telc B1, which should I take?

Both certify CEFR B1 and are widely accepted in Germany. Goethe is modular, so you can pass and retake each skill separately; telc Deutsch B1 is one written exam of reading with language elements, listening and writing plus a paired oral. Choose by what the receiving authority names and which centre has dates near you.

What is TestDaF and what does TDN 4 mean?

TestDaF is the university-entrance German test run by g.a.s.t. and recognised by all German universities. Each of its four parts is scored 0 to 20 and mapped to TDN 3 (5–9), TDN 4 (10–15) or TDN 5 (16–20). Universities commonly ask for TDN 4 in every part, so check the programme page.

How much does the Goethe B1 exam cost?

At Goethe-Institut centres in Germany the 2026 fee is €259 for the full exam or €104 per module. Fees abroad, including in India, are set locally by each Goethe-Institut or partner centre, so check that centre's price page before you register.
