The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is fully modular. Each module (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen) is scored out of 100 points, and 60/100 is a pass in that module. There is no combined pass mark: you receive a result for each module and may retake any single module you do not pass. The certificate does not expire.

About the exam

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 at a glance

About the real Goethe-Zertifikat B1

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is the Goethe-Institut's standardised German-language examination at CEFR level B1. It certifies an independent command of everyday German: the ability to cope with most situations while travelling, describe experiences and opinions, and understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. The exam is modular — Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen are taken and certified independently, and any single module can be retaken. B1 German is the language requirement for German citizenship under the 2024 citizenship law and for many residency and recognition procedures, which makes this the anchor exam for learners settling in Germany.

What it covers

All four Goethe-Zertifikat B1 modules in the official formats: Lesen (5 Teile, 65 min), Hören (4 Teile, some recordings played twice, 40 min), Schreiben (an informal email, an opinion forum post and a formal email, 60 min) and Sprechen (plan together, present a topic, and discuss/give feedback, ~15 min paired with 15 min preparation).

Who sits it

  • Learners who need B1 German for German citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Professionals and trainees who must prove B1 German for jobs, apprenticeships or study places.
  • Applicants toward nursing and other qualification-recognition procedures that require documented German.
  • Students bridging from A2 toward B2, using B1 as an internationally recognised milestone.

How people prepare for it

  • Because the exam is modular, diagnose all four skills first, then focus study on the weakest module — each is passed independently at 60/100.
  • Drill the five Lesen task shapes separately: richtig/falsch, three-option multiple choice, matching people to advertisements, dafuer/dagegen opinions and reading rules.
  • Train Hören with the play-count rule (Teil 1 and Teil 4 twice, Teil 2 and Teil 3 once) and practise note-taking for the speaker-matching task.
  • Write timed B1 texts to the word targets: an ~80-word informal email, an ~80-word opinion forum post and a ~40-word formal email, watching register (du versus Sie).
  • Rehearse Sprechen with a partner: plan an activity together, give a short structured presentation, and be ready to answer follow-up questions and give feedback.

What it opens up

  • A Goethe-Zertifikat B1, module by module, recognised for German citizenship, residency and recognition procedures and valid for life.
  • Documented B1 German for employers, apprenticeships, universities and immigration authorities.
  • A solid platform for progressing toward the Goethe-Zertifikat B2.

Fidelity

How this mirrors the real format

  • The paper structure is the real format: 4 sections in exam order, 62 questions in total.
  • Timing is server-controlled for the full 3 hr 3 min -- closing the tab does not pause the clock, exactly like our paid mock series.
  • Marking follows the published paper: the per-section marks shown in the paper map are the marks the scorer applies.
  • Sections run strictly in order and a completed section cannot be reopened.
  • Break windows fall where the paper schedules them, and each one is shown in the paper map.

"Real format" means the paper shape, timing, marking and navigation above - not the official exam software, its visual identity, or any affiliation with the exam body.

Be clear about this
