The UCAT is the admissions test used by consortium universities for medicine and dentistry in the UK (UCAT) and for medical, dental and clinical-science programmes in Australia and New Zealand (UCAT ANZ). Around 37,000 candidates a year sit the UK test at Pearson VUE centres.

UCAT (UK & ANZ): common questions

How long is the UCAT and how many questions are in each section?

Just under two hours. Verbal Reasoning has 44 questions in 22 minutes, Decision Making 35 in 37 minutes, Quantitative Reasoning 36 in 26 minutes and Situational Judgement 69 in 26 minutes, each preceded by a short instruction screen. That is roughly 30 seconds per verbal item, which is why timing practice matters more than content revision.

How does UCAT scoring work?

Each of the three cognitive subtests is converted to a scaled score from 300 to 900, giving a total of 900–2700. Situational Judgement is reported separately as Band 1 (highest) to Band 4. There is no negative marking, so answer every question, and there is no pass mark — each university sets its own cut-off or weighting.

Does the UCAT total score include Situational Judgement?

No. The 900–2700 total is the sum of Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning only. SJT is reported as a band alongside it. Some medical schools reject Band 4 outright or weight the band in interview selection, so it still matters.

When is UCAT 2026 and when are the 2027 dates?

The official UK booking page says registration for the earlier cycle is closed and that instructions for the next cycle will be published in March 2027. Check that page for confirmed booking guidance rather than projecting a previous timetable onto your application year.

How much does the UCAT cost for a student in India?

Check the applicable UK-consortium or UCAT ANZ booking page for the current fee and testing location. The UK booking page is closed for the earlier cycle and no longer supplies a current price, so this page does not carry its old fee forward as a next-cycle quote.

Is Abstract Reasoning still on the UCAT?

No. The current official format lists four subtests — Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Situational Judgement. Older prep material with Abstract Reasoning pattern questions is out of date; Decision Making is now 37 minutes.

Is the UCAT the same in the UK and Australia/NZ?

Same four subtests and question styles, but different consortia, websites, windows and fees: UCAT UK (ucat.ac.uk) tests July–September for UK medicine and dentistry; UCAT ANZ (ucat.edu.au) tests July to early August for Australian and NZ programmes. Register on the site matching where you will apply.
