How the real UCAT (UK & ANZ) is scored
The three cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning) are each scaled to roughly 300-900 and added together to give a cognitive total of 900-2700. Situational Judgement is not scaled - it is reported as a Band from 1 to 4. Universities weigh the cognitive total, the SJT band and often subtest balance differently, so there is no single national pass mark.

The exam
The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is the admissions aptitude test used by most medical and dental schools in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It measures cognitive skills and professional judgement rather than curriculum knowledge. Since 2025 the exam has four subtests - Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Situational Judgement - after Abstract Reasoning was removed. It is a computer-based test sat under strict time pressure at Pearson VUE centres, with one sitting allowed per annual admissions cycle. The three cognitive subtests are each scaled roughly 300-900 and summed to a cognitive total; Situational Judgement is reported separately as a Band.
The format
All four current UCAT subtests in the official 2025+ formats. Verbal Reasoning (44 items, 22 min) - reading comprehension and True / False / Can't tell inference. Decision Making (35 items, 37 min) - logical puzzles, syllogisms, interpreting information, recognising assumptions, Venn diagrams and probabilistic reasoning. Quantitative Reasoning (36 items, 26 min) - data interpretation and multi-step calculation with an on-screen calculator. Situational Judgement (69 items, 26 min) - rating the appropriateness and importance of responses to professional and clinical dilemmas. Every subtest is trained under exact official timings, because pacing is the hardest part of the UCAT.

How people prepare for it
- Start with a timed diagnostic across all four subtests to find your weakest one and set a baseline scaled score.
- Train pacing from day one - the UCAT is failed on the clock, not on difficulty. Practise Verbal Reasoning at roughly 30 seconds per item.
- Learn the six Decision Making formats separately, then mix them; syllogisms and Venn logic reward drawing quick diagrams.
- Drill Quantitative Reasoning with the on-screen calculator, not your own - fluency with it saves seconds on every item.
- For Situational Judgement, study the four-point appropriateness and importance scales and the principles behind them (patient safety, integrity, teamwork) rather than memorising answers.
- Build up to full timed mocks in the final weeks to rehearse stamina across the whole ~2-hour battery.
