How long is the Duolingo English Test and what is in it?

About one hour: roughly 5 minutes of onboarding, a 45-minute computer-adaptive section, and a 10-minute Writing Sample and Speaking Sample. Thirteen question types appear, from Read and Complete to Interactive Listening and Read Then Speak.

How is the DET scored?

Scores run from 10 to 160 in 5-point steps with four skill subscores and four integrated subscores (Literacy, Comprehension, Conversation, Production). Reading and Listening items are rule-scored instantly; Speaking and Writing are scored by AI models trained on expert-rated samples, with proctors reviewing flagged responses.

How soon do I get my DET result?

Results are certified within 48 hours of finishing the test, or within 12 hours if you buy the Faster Results add-on, and you can then send them to institutions from your account. Certified scores stay valid for two years.

How many times can I take the DET?

You can purchase up to three tests in any 30-day period, and each one is a separate certified attempt with its own score, so a weak result does not block you from sitting again within days once you have addressed the gaps.

Do I really need a second camera?

Yes. Your phone is used for ID verification and room and ear scanning, and its camera must show your whole testing environment including the screen and keyboard. Looking away from the screen, getting help or running other software can invalidate the test.

What counts as a good DET score?

There is no pass mark; universities set their own minimums, commonly in the 105–120 range for undergraduate study and 120 or above for competitive graduate programmes. Check each programme's page for its requirement.
