Top GATE EE rank-holders typically score 75-90 marks (out of 100) for AIR under 100, which unlocks IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay/Delhi/Madras M.Tech admission and shortlisting at top-tier PSUs (PGCIL, NTPC E1 grade). Marks of 55-75 with AIR 100-1000 generally place candidates into IIT M.Tech across other branches or mid-tier PSU interviews. Qualifying cut-off (for valid GATE scorecard) is around 25 marks; approximately 15-17% of EE candidates qualify each year.

About the exam

The real GATE EE

GATE Electrical Engineering (EE) is the gateway for India's top M.Tech programmes at IISc, IITs and NITs in Power Systems, Power Electronics, Control and Instrumentation, Energy Systems and Machine Drives. It is also the recruitment screen for the country's largest PSU pipeline — NTPC, PowerGrid (PGCIL), BHEL, NHPC, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, HPCL, NLC, DVC and over 30 other central PSUs hire EE candidates primarily on their GATE score. With ~150,000 candidates annually, EE is one of the most competitive papers in the GATE family. The exam tests breadth across 10 sections — engineering mathematics, electric circuits, electromagnetic fields, signals and systems, electrical machines, power systems, control systems, measurements, analog and digital electronics, and power electronics — with 65 questions in 180 minutes for a total of 100 marks.

How people prepare for it

About the real GATE EE

Do I need to study General Aptitude separately?
Yes — General Aptitude carries 15 marks (10 questions), which is more than any single technical section except Math, Machines, and Power Systems. Around 60-70% of EE toppers score 12+ on GA. Treat GA as a 30-day sprint in months 7-8.
Is there overlap between GATE EE and GATE EC (Electronics)?
Significant overlap in Engineering Math, Signals and Systems, and Analog/Digital Electronics. Control Systems and Electromagnetic Fields have moderate overlap with different emphases. Power Systems, Electrical Machines, and Power Electronics are EE-exclusive. Roughly 35-40% syllabus overlap with EC.
Which section is the hardest to master?
Power Systems is often cited as the hardest because it integrates electric circuits, electromagnetic theory, machine modelling, and numerical methods (per-unit, load flow). Symmetrical components and fault analysis in particular require fluency with complex algebra.
Can I clear GATE EE with self-study?
Yes — most GATE EE toppers (especially AIR 1-500) report self-study with standard textbooks (Hughes, Nagrath-Kothari, Grainger, Ogata, Sedra-Smith) and 8-10 years of PYQ practice. Coaching adds structure but is not required.
How important are numerical answer type (NAT) questions?
Very — NAT carries 30-40% of total marks, has no negative marking, and reward genuine problem-solving. Many GATE EE toppers report NAT accuracy of 75-85% on test day.
Is the GATE 2026 syllabus the same as 2027?
Likely yes. The syllabus has been stable since 2021 with only minor wording changes. IIT Madras (the 2027 organising institute) is expected to publish the 2027 syllabus in August 2026; historically these changes have been minimal (<5%).
