About the exam

SQE1, on the record

SQE1 is the first stage of the Solicitors Regulation Authority's route to qualifying as a solicitor of England and Wales. It is two computer-based exams — FLK1 and FLK2 — sat at Pearson VUE test centres, each 180 single-best-answer questions with five options. Both must be passed, you get up to three attempts within six years, and SQE1 is followed by SQE2 and qualifying work experience.

The two tracks

Same shape, different law

FLK1

Functioning legal knowledge, paper one: business, litigation and the legal system — 180 single-best-answer questions in the real five-option format.

Business Litigation The legal system § conduct woven in

FLK2

Functioning legal knowledge, paper two: property, estates, trusts and crime — the same 180-question, five-option, single-best-answer shape as track one.

Property Estates Trusts Crime § conduct woven in

Both papers must be passed. Our 14 practice areas map the full breadth — so nothing on either track is a stranger on exam day.

Inside Myndaq

Built like a coach, not a question bank

SESSION · Q 4 OF 10 3 CORRECT
A client asks you to act on a matter where you hold confidential information for a former client. Which one of the following best states your position?
A · Act, provided the fee is reasonable B · Decline unless conduct rules on confidentiality are satisfied C · Act and inform neither client

The real SBAQ shape, every day

Ten-question sessions in the exam's own format — single best answer, five options, plausible distractors. Instant scoring, and a clear explanation of why the best answer beats the second-best. That gap is where SQE1 is won.

An AI tutor that argues like a lawyer

The Myndaq Tutor sees the exact question on your screen. Ask why option D fails and it reasons through the rule with you — it guides, and never just hands over the answer. Ethics questions included: the golden thread runs through the tutor too.

MYNDAQ TUTOR · ON THIS QUESTION LIVE
Why is B better than D here? D looks right too.
Both are arguable — that's the SBAQ trap. Start from the duty in play: what does the question tell you about the former client's information? Read the stem again and tell me which fact makes one duty override the other.

Guides your reasoning. Never spoils the answer.

FAQ

Asked before every sitting

How many attempts do I get at SQE1?

Up to three attempts within a six-year period — and both FLK1 and FLK2 must be passed.

What is the difference between FLK1 and FLK2?

FLK1 covers business, litigation and the legal system; FLK2 covers property, estates, trusts and crime. Same format on both: 180 single-best-answer questions.

How many questions is SQE1 in total?

360 — two computer-based papers of 180 questions each, sat at Pearson VUE test centres, every question single best answer with five options.

Is ethics a separate paper?

No — SRA principles and professional conduct are pervasive. Ethics can surface inside any question on either paper, which is exactly how we drill it.

How is SQE1 marked?

Each assessment carries one scaled pass mark. There's no per-area minimum — which is why breadth-wide, weakness-first practice is the rational strategy.

What comes after SQE1?

SQE2, plus qualifying work experience — together they complete the route to qualifying as a solicitor of England and Wales.
