The SQE1 (FLK1 + FLK2) on file

The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is the single national route to qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales, set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and delivered by Kaplan. SQE1 is its first stage: it tests Functioning Legal Knowledge - your ability to apply the law a newly qualified solicitor uses - through two computer-based assessments, FLK1 and FLK2. Each is 180 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions (360 in total), sat in two sessions of 90 questions with a break. Questions are set in realistic client scenarios; ethics and professional conduct run through both papers rather than sitting in a section of their own.

Format
The full SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge syllabus across two assessments. FLK1: Business Law and Practice; Dispute Resolution; Contract; Tort; the Legal System of England and Wales (sources of law, constitutional, administrative and retained EU law); and Legal Services regulation. FLK2: Property Practice; Wills and the Administration of Estates; Solicitors Accounts; Land Law; Trusts; and Criminal Law and Practice. Ethics and professional conduct - the SRA Principles and Codes of Conduct - are tested pervasively inside scenarios across both papers. Every item is a five-option single-best-answer MCQ.
Candidates
  • Law graduates and PGDL/conversion students qualifying as solicitors through the SQE route.
  • Paralegals and legal apprentices building qualifying work experience toward admission.
  • Career changers and non-law graduates preparing for FLK1 and FLK2.
  • Qualified lawyers from other jurisdictions requalifying as solicitors of England and Wales.

Preparation
  • Treat FLK1 and FLK2 as two exams: you must reach the pass standard on each separately, so balance your revision across both.
  • Drill by knowledge area, then mix areas, because the real papers interleave subjects and hide ethics inside ordinary scenarios.
  • Practise reading long client-scenario stems quickly - you have on average about 100 seconds per question with no negative marking, so answer every item.
  • For Solicitors Accounts and business/tax items, work the figures in the scenario but always choose from the five options.
  • Review the rationale for every option, not just the key - SQE1 rewards choosing the best answer among several plausible ones.
Leads to
  • Confident application of Functioning Legal Knowledge to client scenarios rather than rote recall.
  • A clear per-area view of strength across all FLK1 and FLK2 knowledge areas before spending on the real exam.
  • A foundation for SQE2 skills preparation (a separate exam, not covered here).

Fidelity

How this mirrors the real format

  • The paper structure is the real format: 2 sections in exam order, 180 questions in total.
  • Timing is server-controlled for the full 5 hr 6 min -- closing the tab does not pause the clock, exactly like our paid mock series.
  • Marking follows the published paper: the per-section marks shown in the paper map are the marks the scorer applies.
  • Sections run strictly in order and a completed section cannot be reopened.
  • Break windows fall where the paper schedules them, and each one is shown in the paper map.

"Real format" means the paper shape, timing, marking and navigation above - not the official exam software, its visual identity, or any affiliation with the exam body.
