TOEFL iBT changed on 21 January 2026. Reading and Listening now use multistage adaptive delivery, task types changed across the test, and official score reports use a 1-6 scale in half-point increments.
ETS says the test takes just under two hours. Plan about 2.5 hours at the appointment to allow 30 minutes for check-in. The section table below adds to about 90 minutes of base task time, but that total excludes directions and can vary as the test adapts.
Current TOEFL iBT format
- Reading — 50 base items, about 30 minutes: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage.
- Listening — 47 base items, about 29 minutes: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement and Listen to an Academic Talk.
- Writing — 12 base items, about 23 minutes: Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion.
- Speaking — 11 base items, about 8 minutes: Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
ETS labels these item counts and times as base figures. Reading and Listening adapt, so the live test can vary. There is no scheduled break.
Older preparation that teaches the pre-2026 integrated Speaking set, the former long Reading and Listening structure, or the old independent Writing essay does not match this format.
What adaptive Reading and Listening mean
ETS describes Reading and Listening as multistage adaptive. The test adjusts later material to the demonstrated proficiency level. Speaking and Writing are not described by ETS as adaptive sections.
Do not convert that into an “accuracy early” myth. ETS does not publish a rule saying the first few answers receive extra marks or that one early mistake caps the final score. Nor does adaptive delivery make later questions individually worth more. Build reliable comprehension across easy and difficult material, and answer each item carefully within the available time.
The adaptive design also means a practice set with one fixed sequence cannot perfectly reproduce the live route. It can still test skills and timing, but its score remains a practice estimate.
Scoring and the transition period
You receive four section scores and an overall score from 1 to 6 in half-point increments.
- The overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band.
- ETS gives the example that an average of 5.25 becomes 5.5, while 5.125 becomes 5.0.
- ETS sets no universal pass or fail score. Each institution decides its requirement.
- Current score reports also show a comparable overall estimate on the former 0-120 scale during the transition.
The transition rule is specific: for a two-year period after January 2026, ETS reports the comparable 0-120 overall estimate alongside the 1-6 results. ETS says the estimate represents the midpoint of the corresponding total-score range. It is not a new set of official 0-30 section scores, and candidates should not create their own conversion when the official report already supplies the comparable total.
Institutions are moving to the 1-6 scale at different times. Check the programme page and confirm whether it states an overall minimum, section minima, MyBest-score policy or another condition. An old 0-120 requirement can be compared with the comparable total printed on the official current report.
An official ETS score report is different from a mock result. A score from a preparation platform, tutor rubric or fixed practice test is an estimate. It should never be described as an official TOEFL score.
Price, results, validity and retakes
TOEFL iBT registration fees vary by testing location. ETS's fee page requires you to select the location to see the current registration price; taxes and optional services can change the checkout total. Verify the live total before paying rather than using a converted fee from an old article.
Official scores are available in the ETS account three days after the test date. The exact expected date is shown at the end of the test. Scores remain valid for two years.
You can retake TOEFL iBT as often as needed, but not more than once in a three-day period. Leave enough time for score release, preparation and application delivery rather than scheduling the earliest possible retake automatically.
Test centre and Home Edition
TOEFL iBT is offered:
- on a computer at an authorised test centre; or
- as TOEFL iBT Home Edition on a computer at home, monitored online by a live human proctor.
ETS says the Home Edition is the same TOEFL iBT test as the test-centre version. Availability and recipient requirements can differ, so confirm both before booking.
For Home Edition, run the official equipment and environment checks before payment. For a test centre, use the ID rules for your testing location. In either mode, the name and date of birth in the booking must exactly match the accepted identity document.
Preparation workflow
- Set the score contract. Record the programme's overall and section requirements and whether it accepts Home Edition and MyBest scores.
- Discard old-format assumptions. Learn the 2026 task names, section order and base timings.
- Take a current diagnostic. Use current official material. Label any resulting band as a practice estimate.
- Train Reading and Listening broadly. Practise vocabulary in context, daily-life texts, academic passages, short responses, conversations, announcements and academic talks.
- Train output by task. Build sentences accurately, write concise emails, contribute directly to an academic discussion, repeat speech clearly and answer interview prompts naturally.
- Use timed section blocks. The base task time is dense even though the full appointment is longer.
- Review evidence. For receptive tasks, classify comprehension errors. For output, review relevance, organisation, language control, intelligibility and completion.
- Complete full simulations. Follow Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking with no scheduled break.
- Book with deadline margin. Allow three days for your account result plus the recipient's score-delivery time and a possible retake.
