TOEFL iBT 2026 Guide - The New Shorter Format Explained

TOEFLTOEFL 2026study abroad

TOEFL iBT changed meaningfully in 2026: the sections are adaptive, there are new task types, and scores now come on a 1-6 band scale. If you prepared from older material, some of it is now wrong. Here is the current test, per ETS.

How long is it?

Plan to allow about 2 hours for the appointment (check-in, instructions, the test itself). The actual testing time is around 90 minutes across the four sections — the test is shorter and denser than the older format, so every section is a sprint. ETS also notes that because the test adapts, exact time and item counts can vary slightly.

The format

Four sections, taken in order (approximate ETS timings and item counts):

  • Reading — ~30 min, ~50 items. Tasks: Complete the Words (a quick vocabulary task), Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage.
  • Listening — ~29 min, ~47 items. Tasks: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk.
  • Speaking — ~8 min, ~11 items. Tasks: Listen and Repeat (phonological fluency) and Take an Interview.
  • Writing — ~23 min, ~12 items. Tasks: Build a Sentence (syntax), Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion (a typed response to a discussion board). The two long essays of the old format are gone.

The high item counts reflect the new task style — many short, focused items (especially the Complete the Words and Listen and Repeat tasks) rather than a handful of long passages and prompts.

The scoring

  • You receive four section scores plus an overall score on a 1-6 scale.
  • The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band (e.g. 5.125 rounds to 5.0). The scale is broadly CEFR-aligned (6 ≈ C2, 5-5.5 ≈ C1, 4-4.5 ≈ B2).
  • Transition rule: for a two-year period after January 2026, ETS also reports a comparable overall score on the old 0-120 scale alongside the 1-6 score, so universities still reading 0-120 can interpret your result. Note this 0-120 figure is an overall comparable score, not a set of per-section legacy scores.

Because universities are mid-transition, check whether your target program states its requirement in 1-6 bands or the 0-120 comparable — and give them the one they ask for.

What the changes mean for preparation

  1. Shorter and denser. With ~90 minutes of testing, there's less endurance demand but more per-minute pressure. Practise at the current timings, not the old three-hour ones.
  2. Adaptive sections reward a strong, careful start. As the test adapts to your answers, a strong opening keeps you in higher-level material — don't rush the early items.
  3. New task types need direct drilling. Complete the Words, Listen and Repeat, Build a Sentence and Write an Email are unfamiliar even to strong English users — trainable, but only if you practise them specifically.
  4. Writing is now short, precise tasks. The skill shifted from essay stamina to fast, accurate, on-brief responses — especially Write for an Academic Discussion, which rewards a clear contribution with an example in a tight word count.

A preparation plan

  • Weeks 1-2: one full current-format mock to baseline all four sections and meet the new task types. Score against the 1-6 band scale.
  • Weeks 3-5: skill blocks, weakest first. Drill the new task types until they are reflexive; build Reading and Listening speed since the pace is tight.
  • Weeks 6-8: full timed mocks at the real pace, reviewing each fully. For Speaking and Writing, get criterion feedback — you cannot self-see fluency gaps or a wandering Academic Discussion response.
