DELE is a family of official Spanish diplomas, not one test with one target score. You register for a particular CEFR level and must meet that level's pass rule.
The detailed preparation track in this guide is the general DELE B2 examination. Before choosing it, verify the exact diploma, level and candidate version required by your university, employer, professional body or public authority. DELE has wide international recognition, but no certificate should be described as universally accepted for every route.
Understand the DELE exam family
General DELE
The general examinations cover A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. Instituto Cervantes manages them on behalf of Spain's education ministry. A successful candidate receives the diploma for the level taken; the result is not a sliding score that automatically awards another general DELE level.
For A1 through C1, the exam has four skill tests organised into two scoring groups. C2 instead uses three integrated tests and a different pass rule.
DELE for school-age candidates
School versions use age-appropriate contexts. They are not simply easier copies of the general adult papers. In 2026, Instituto Cervantes introduced a B2/C1 school examination for candidates aged 11 to 17 that can award B2 or C1 according to performance.
Choose a school version only when you meet its candidate rules and it suits the intended use. Do not prepare from the general B2 guide while assuming every task will transfer unchanged.
DELE and SIELE
DELE and SIELE are different products. DELE awards a diploma for a selected CEFR level and Instituto Cervantes states that the diploma has indefinite validity. SIELE is a separate digital certification service with its own reporting and validity rules.
An institution that accepts one may or may not accept the other. Confirm the exact name in the requirement rather than treating “Spanish certificate” as sufficient.
Choose the right CEFR level
Select the lowest level that fully satisfies the receiving organisation's rule, then check that it matches your present ability.
- A1-A2: basic personal information, routine needs and simple exchanges.
- B1: connected communication about familiar situations and experiences.
- B2: understanding the essential content of complex material, interacting with sufficient fluency and producing clear, detailed argument.
- C1-C2: advanced, flexible and precise use, including demanding integrated and mediation tasks.
For B2, you should be able to follow more than the main idea. You need to distinguish viewpoints, manage different Spanish varieties in comprehension, develop a position and sustain interaction without depending on rehearsed answers.
Use an official B2 paper as a placement check. If you understand texts only after unrestricted dictionary use, cannot sustain the written tasks or cannot discuss an unfamiliar issue after preparation, build general B2 language before concentrating on shortcuts.
Current DELE B2 format and scoring
The official B2 guide describes four tests.
- Comprensión de lectura: 70 minutes; 4 tasks, 36 items.
- Comprensión auditiva: 40 minutes; 5 tasks, 30 items.
- Expresión e interacción escritas: 80 minutes; 2 tasks.
- Expresión e interacción orales: 20 minutes plus 20 minutes' preparation; 3 tasks.
Each test contributes 25 points to the 100-point examination. For A1-B2, the two pass groups are:
- Group 1: Reading plus Writing, maximum 50, minimum 30.
- Group 2: Listening plus Speaking, maximum 50, minimum 30.
You need at least 30 in both groups to receive APTO. A high Reading and Writing group cannot compensate for a Listening and Speaking group below 30. The overall consequence is that balanced preparation matters more than chasing an impressive total in one receptive skill.
In B2 comprehension tasks, official materials may include major varieties of Spanish. In your own production, Instituto Cervantes accepts a Spanish variety when it is used consistently and is supported by broad educated usage. Accent imitation is not the goal; clear, appropriate and coherent communication is.
Run a four-skill diagnostic
Use an official model paper and its audio. Reproduce the published timing and do not pause listening to create an unrealistically comfortable score.
Track:
- Reading accuracy by task, especially matching and text-completion errors.
- Listening errors caused by missed detail, speaker attitude, distractors or note overload.
- Whether both Writing tasks are complete and respect purpose, audience and required length.
- Whether Speaking covers every prompt, develops reasons and responds to the examiner.
- Time lost to rereading, rewriting or long silent planning.
Do not turn the answer-key percentage into an official DELE score. Productive tests use rating scales, and the final grouped result is issued by Instituto Cervantes. A diagnostic is useful for finding weaknesses, not predicting a guaranteed APTO.
Create an error log with three fields: task evidence, cause and next drill. “Listening is weak” is too broad. “I choose the first option containing a repeated word instead of checking the speaker's conclusion” leads to a specific correction.
Follow a B2 study workflow
Build comprehension depth
Read news features, public information, opinion pieces and practical correspondence from different Spanish-speaking contexts. After each text, state the purpose, position, evidence and tone. For audio, practise one uninterrupted listen first, then use the transcript only during review.
Train by official task
Work through every task type separately until instructions and answer transfer are automatic. Then combine tasks under time. Review why each distractor is wrong; simply noting the correct letter does not improve discrimination.
Integrate production
Use weekly themes across skills. Read and listen about one issue, collect useful language, write a response and discuss the same issue aloud. This develops the ability to reuse ideas without memorising a fixed script.
Simulate the whole demand
In the final phase, complete paired skill days: Reading plus Writing, and Listening plus Speaking. This reflects the grouped pass rule and reveals whether fatigue harms the second skill in a group.
A practical week can contain two comprehension sessions, two productive sessions, one correction session and one timed mixed block. Keep one lighter day for vocabulary retrieval and error-log recycling.
Review Writing and Speaking against the task
For Writing, review in this order:
- Completion: every instruction and content point is addressed.
- Register: the relationship, purpose and text type are appropriate.
- Coherence: paragraphs and connectors show a clear progression.
- Range: vocabulary and structures are varied enough for the topic.
- Control: errors do not repeatedly damage meaning.
Rewrite only the weakest paragraph after feedback, then complete a new task using the same correction. This is more transferable than polishing one essay indefinitely.
For Speaking, record the complete three-task sequence. Check whether you evaluate options, imagine and describe a situation, express a view on information, and sustain the follow-up conversation. Review:
- relevance to the prompt;
- clarity and development of reasons;
- turn-taking and response to questions;
- fluency without excessive fillers;
- grammatical and lexical range;
- intelligible pronunciation.
Prepare structures for functions such as comparing, hypothesising, qualifying and disagreeing politely. Do not memorise a speech that ignores the examiner's follow-up.
