For tests taken from 21 January 2026 ETS reports TOEFL iBT on a 1–6 scale in half-band steps, with a comparable legacy 0–120 total on reports for two years. ETS publishes the alignment: band 4 corresponds to a total of 72 or more and CEFR B2; band 5 to 95+ and C1; band 6 to 114+ and C2. The overall band is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest half band.
On the ETS IELTS-to-TOEFL table, IELTS 6.5 corresponds to a TOEFL total of 4.5 (legacy 86+) and IELTS 7 to a TOEFL total of 5 (legacy 95+); IELTS 7.5 is 5.5 and IELTS 8, 8.5 and 9 all correspond to 6. ETS also lists section-level equivalents, which differ from the total. Universities publish their own accepted minimums for each test.
Pearson’s July 2025 concordance puts PTE Academic 63 level with IELTS 7.0, 55 with 6.5, 71 with 7.5 and 79 with 8.0. A PTE score between two points has reached the lower band. Pearson notes the table shows how the tests compare, not which scores institutions accept.
Not officially yet. Pearson says it will publish updated relationships with other tests, including TOEFL, after its July 2025 study. This converter shows a PTE-to-TOEFL figure only as an indicative value chained through IELTS, and labels it as such — check the requirement page of the institution you are applying to.
Duolingo publishes its own DET-to-IELTS, TOEFL and CEFR comparison and updates it periodically. Because that table is maintained by Duolingo and changes, this tool links to it rather than reprinting a copy that could go stale.
No conversion is a substitute for the score a university or immigration authority names for the specific test you took. Use these tables to choose which test suits you and to set a target; then confirm the exact requirement with the receiving institution.
