How the real TOEFL iBT is scored
TOEFL iBT (2026) reports four section scores plus an overall score on a 1-6 CEFR-aligned scale in half-point increments. During a two-year transition window, a comparable 0-120 overall is also reported so institutions can apply the requirements they already use. There is no fixed 'pass' - each university sets its own minimum (commonly an overall plus per-section minimums). Scores are valid for 2 years.

The real TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test) measures your ability to use English in academic and everyday settings. It is accepted by more than 13,000 universities and institutions across 160+ countries. In the format effective January 21, 2026, Reading and Listening each use a fixed Module 1 followed by an easier or harder Module 2; Writing and Speaking are linear. The test takes about 83-89 minutes. Scores are reported as four section scores plus an overall on a 1-6 scale in half-point increments, with a comparable 0-120 score during the transition period.
What the real TOEFL iBT covers
All four TOEFL iBT skills in the format effective January 21, 2026: (1) Reading - Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. (2) Listening - Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk. (3) Speaking - seven Listen and Repeat items plus four Take an Interview questions, with no preparation time. (4) Writing - ten Build a Sentence items, one Write an Email task, and one Write for an Academic Discussion task.
How people prepare for it
- 1Find your baseline. Do one timed Reading and one timed Listening set to see where you stand, and note your speed - TOEFL rewards efficient reading and focused listening, and the adaptive Module 2 means a strong Module 1 unlocks a higher score ceiling.
- 2Train Listening with note-taking. You hear each lecture/conversation once, so practise jotting structure (main point, examples, shifts in attitude) as you listen. Prioritise the academic lecture and conversation tasks - they carry the most question weight.
- 3Build academic Reading skill, not just speed. Practise locating main ideas, distinguishing detail from inference, and the vocabulary-in-context questions. Read short academic texts daily to get comfortable with the register.
- 4Rehearse Speaking out loud, on a timer, into a mic. Practise repeating short sentences accurately and answering interview questions spontaneously with clear pronunciation, relevant detail, and coherent organisation.
