YOUR PREPARATION PRIORITIES

Give each session a purpose.

Illustration of two adult Indian data-science students examining a large printed scatter plot without labels and a geometric probability model at a university study desk, one explaining a pattern, plum and teal room accents, warm afternoon window light, no legible screens, cinematic editorial photograph..

01

Ground the model in mathematics

Work through probability, statistics, linear algebra and calculus with their modelling purpose in view. Check dimensions and assumptions as you go.

02

Trace the computation

Practise reading a procedure, following its intermediate values and interpreting the result. A correct implementation starts with a clear model of the task.

03

Compare learning methods

Distinguish what an algorithm learns, what it assumes and how it is evaluated. Use small examples to understand the behaviour behind the terminology.

YOUR PRACTICE ROUTINE

Turn the next step into a habit.

  1. 01

    Establish your starting point

Start with probability, linear algebra and programming questions to identify the foundation that limits your modelling work. Record the assumption you missed in each solution.

  2. 02

    Practise the difficult distinction

Link a mathematical idea to a computation or model. Use a small example to check what the method predicts and how its behaviour changes when an assumption changes.

  3. 03

    Review before repeating

Review a mixed practice set by the type of reasoning required. Work again on one weak relationship rather than immediately attempting another complete set.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Start with a clear purpose.

Build a preparation routine for GATE DA. Use focused practice, explanations and the AI tutor to understand what needs your attention next.

  1. Question 1 · easy · Uniform Distribution

    For X ~ Uniform[0, 10], what is P(X ≤ 3)?

    • 3
    • 0.7
    • 0.1
    • 0.3

  2. Question 2 · easy · Orthogonal Matrix

Let Q be a 3×3 orthogonal matrix. Which of the following must be true?

    • Q⁻¹ = Q and det(Q) = 1
    • Q⁻¹ = −Qᵀ and det(Q) = 0
    • Q⁻¹ = Qᵀ and det(Q) = 0
    • Q⁻¹ = Qᵀ and det(Q) = ±1
Check your answer with the AI tutor →
  3. Question 3 · easy · Stability

Why is stability important when sorting records?

    • It preserves the relative order of records with equal keys, which matters for multi-key sorting.
    • It ensures the algorithm performs no unnecessary swaps.
    • It guarantees the algorithm runs in O(n log n) time.
    • It reduces the extra space needed to O(1).

  4. Question 4 · hard · Elimination Order · Treewidth

Which of the following best explains why the choice of elimination order is critical for variable elimination, even though every order yields the same final answer?

    • Different orders can produce different posterior probabilities due to floating-point error accumulation, which is the main concern.
    • Different orders induce different treewidths of the elimination-induced graph, exponentially changing the size of the largest intermediate factor.
    • Different orders only matter when evidence is present; without evidence, all orders cost the same.
    • Different orders change the conditional independence structure of the network, altering which factors are needed.

  5. Question 5 · easy · Sample Space · Classical Probability

Two fair coins are tossed simultaneously. What is the probability of getting exactly one head?

    • 3/4
    • 1/3
    • 1/4
    • 1/2

THE FACTS BEHIND THE TEST

Official details, clearly explained.

GATE DA is the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, introduced in 2024 for admission to M.Tech and PhD programmes in AI, ML and data science. GATE is conducted jointly by IISc and the seven older IITs on behalf of the Ministry of Education; the 2027 edition is organised by IIT Madras.

GATE DA: common questions

What is GATE DA?

GATE DA is the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence paper of GATE, introduced in 2024. It is a 3-hour computer-based paper of 65 questions for 100 marks: 15 marks of General Aptitude and 85 marks on probability and statistics, linear algebra, calculus and optimisation, Python programming and data structures, databases, machine learning and AI.

GATE DA or GATE CS — which should I choose?

Choose CS if you want core-CS M.Tech seats, PSU recruitment and the largest seat pool; choose DA if your target is AI, ML or data-science programmes and you are stronger in maths and Python than in operating systems, networks and compilers. The two can be written together in the same year as an allowed combination.

Can I appear for both GATE DA and GATE CS?

Yes. The official two-paper table lists DA as an allowed second paper for CS and CS as an allowed second paper for DA. You pay the application fee twice and the papers are scheduled in different sessions.

How is GATE DA marked?

Only MCQs carry negative marks: one-third of a mark for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and two-thirds for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. Multiple-select (MSQ) and numerical-answer (NAT) questions have no negative marking, so attempt every NAT and MSQ.

Which programming language is used in GATE DA?

Python. The official syllabus says 'Programming in Python, basic data structures: stacks, queues, linked lists, trees, hash tables', plus search, sorting and basic algorithm analysis. You do not need C or C++ for DA.

Can I crack GATE DA without a computer-science background?

Yes. Eligibility is any undergraduate degree from the third year onward, and the syllabus is maths-heavy — probability, linear algebra, calculus — with only one programming section. Students from maths, statistics, electronics and economics backgrounds appear every year.

What does the Myndaq GATE DA course include?

Practice across Probability & Statistics, Linear Algebra, Machine Learning, AI with an AI tutor that explains every answer, plus progress analytics and full-length timed mock tests.

Is there a free GATE DA mock test?

Myndaq runs a free mock test programme. Availability varies by exam and publication status — check the free mock tests page. One attempt per account, for one eligible exam; sign in with Google or an email link, no payment card required. See free mock tests →
