TEF Canada and TCF Canada are separate French tests accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for specified immigration routes. TEF Canada is produced by Le français des affaires at the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry. TCF Canada is produced by France Éducation international.
They test the same four broad abilities for immigration, but their tasks, timings and score reports are different. Never use a TEF conversion table for a TCF result, or a TCF preparation format for TEF.
Every figure in this guide is checked against the official test-provider and IRCC sources linked below — last verified 8 August 2026. Programme eligibility, required NCLC levels and score-entry instructions can change. Recheck the exact IRCC route before booking and before submitting a profile or application.
First identify the Canadian route
IRCC names both TEF Canada and TCF Canada as approved French tests for Express Entry. That approval does not mean every Canadian process has identical requirements.
Before choosing a test, write down:
- immigration, work-permit or citizenship route;
- whether French is being used as the first or second official language;
- required NCLC level in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking;
- whether all four abilities are required;
- result-age rule and the date on which it is checked;
- exact score column the application system asks you to enter.
For Express Entry, IRCC says language results must be less than two years old both when the profile is completed and when the permanent-residence application is submitted. A qualifying language result contributes only one part of an application; it does not guarantee eligibility, an invitation or approval.
TEF Canada and TCF Canada are not editions of one exam

The NCLC outcome is ability-specific. There is no official combined “French band” to average across the four abilities.
Current TEF Canada format
For a Canadian immigration application, the official TEF Canada page requires all four tests on the same day.
- Reading comprehension: 40 multiple-choice questions; 60 minutes.
- Listening comprehension: 40 multiple-choice questions; 40 minutes.
- Written expression: 2 sections; 60 minutes.
- Oral expression: 2 sections with an interlocutor; 15 minutes.
In Written Expression, Section A asks the candidate to continue an article in at least 80 words, while Section B asks for a justified point of view in at least 200 words. In Oral Expression, Section A focuses on obtaining information and Section B on presenting an argument to persuade.
For the citizenship use case described by the test provider, TEF Canada offers Listening and Speaking as the two compulsory tests. Check IRCC's current citizenship evidence wizard to confirm whether you need third-party test evidence and what result is accepted in your circumstances.
Do not book another TEF variant—such as TEF Études, TEF IRN or TEFAQ—on the assumption that the similar name will satisfy an IRCC route that specifies TEF Canada.
Current TCF Canada format
France Éducation international describes TCF Canada as four mandatory tests:
- Listening comprehension: 39 multiple-choice questions; 35 minutes.
- Reading comprehension: 39 multiple-choice questions; 60 minutes.
- Written expression: 3 exercises; 60 minutes.
- Oral expression: 3 exercises with an examiner; 12 minutes, including 2 minutes of preparation.
The published total is 2 hours 47 minutes. TCF Canada is a distinct version of TCF for Canadian procedures. TCF Tout Public, TCF IRN and TCF Québec have different purposes or component rules; select TCF Canada when the route specifically names it.
Unlike the TEF Canada citizenship package described above, France Éducation international presents TCF Canada as a four-test package. Do not assume that a receiving authority's focus on oral skills changes the test provider's booking package.
How TEF Canada results are reported
The current TEF Canada certificate reports a score for each ability on a 0–699 scale and indicates CEFR and NCLC equivalence. Reading and Listening questions receive one raw point for a correct response and zero for a wrong or blank response, but the number correct is converted to a calibrated score. Productive tests are also converted to calibrated scores.
There is a critical Express Entry data-entry rule. IRCC instructs TEF Canada candidates to use the values in the Équivalence ancien score or previous-score-equivalency column for Express Entry, regardless of the test date. IRCC warns that entering the certificate's Score / 699 values in the wrong field can produce an incorrect NCLC equivalency.
Other IRCC routes may publish tables using the current 0–699 scores. Follow the page for the exact route and application system; do not generalise the Express Entry entry instruction or an equivalency table from a different programme.
How TCF Canada results are reported
TCF Canada reports:
- a score from 100 to 699 for Listening;
- a score from 100 to 699 for Reading;
- a mark out of 20 for Writing;
- a mark out of 20 for Speaking;
- a CEFR level and an NCLC equivalence for each ability.
IRCC and France Éducation international publish TCF Canada correspondence tables. Because comprehension and production use different numeric scales, a single raw-looking number cannot be interpreted without the ability name.
Use the exact TCF Canada row for Reading, Writing, Listening or Speaking. Do not transpose the columns: the official cut-offs can differ between Reading and Listening even at the same NCLC level.
Results, validity and fees
Both providers state that their Canada-test result certificates are valid for two years from the date of issue. IRCC may express its application rule as results being less than two years old, so check the date and stage named by the route.
Le français des affaires says TEF Canada results are normally transmitted in about two weeks. France Éducation international says TCF Canada results are made available through the candidate space and sent to the test centre within 15 working days after it receives the session materials. These are provider windows, not guarantees for an immigration deadline.
There is no reliable universal fee for either test. Test centres set or publish local charges. Check the final amount, included components, taxes, transfer policy and cancellation conditions directly with the authorised centre.
Choose between TEF Canada and TCF Canada
If both are accepted for the exact route, compare:
- Authorised centre access: realistic travel distance and available dates.
- Task fit: two productive sections in TEF versus three exercises in TCF.
- Score-report handling: comfort following the correct route-specific TEF or TCF entry table.
- Preparation evidence: performance on current official samples, not hearsay about which exam is “easier”.
- Deadline margin: provider result window plus application processing and a possible retest.
- Centre rules: identification, keyboard or paper arrangements, rescheduling and local fee.
Neither provider publishes a rule that one test is universally easier. A task format can suit one candidate while exposing another candidate's weaker interaction, reading speed or written organisation.
Run a separate diagnostic for each format
Do not decide from a general French placement test alone. Use official TEF Canada and TCF Canada sample material and reproduce each test's task instructions.
Create two diagnostic rows:
- TEF Canada: Reading / Listening / two Writing sections / two Speaking sections;
- TCF Canada: Reading / Listening / three Writing exercises / three Speaking exercises.
For each row, record accuracy or completion, time used, language level, task-procedure errors and the official ability-specific NCLC target for the route. Compare evidence, then choose one exam and stop splitting preparation time across both formats.
Four-skill preparation workflow
Listening comprehension
Practise identifying situation, speaker role, purpose, attitude and the detail that distinguishes close options. After each set, replay with the transcript where officially available. Mark the exact cue and the distractor that captured your attention.
Train in the chosen exam's order and interface. TEF and TCF use different item counts and timings, so a generic French listening score is not a format rehearsal.
Reading comprehension
For every error, locate the sentence or text relationship that proves the answer. Classify the cause as vocabulary, syntax, reference, inference, purpose, time or careless selection.
Build speed by reading varied public, professional and everyday texts, but keep exam review evidence-based. “I understood the topic” is not enough if the question depends on tone or a limiting detail.
Written expression
For TEF, practise the two official purposes separately: continuing a news-style text and developing a justified viewpoint. Respect the minimum lengths and the distinct time allocations.
For TCF, practise all three exercise types from the current candidate manual and samples. Plan for the addressee, purpose, required information and word range of each task.
Review content completion, coherence, register, vocabulary range, grammar and spelling. A polished response that ignores one required point is not complete.
Oral expression
TEF candidates should practise requesting information and persuading an interlocutor. TCF candidates should rehearse its three-exercise progression, including the task with preparation time.
Record practice with another person when possible. Review whether questions are purposeful, arguments are developed, interaction is responsive and pronunciation is intelligible. Memorised speeches are a weak substitute for live interaction.

Keep official practice performance separate from an official result certificate. Do not convert a self-marked productive response into an NCLC claim.
