The SAT is priced in US dollars everywhere, with one surcharge for testing outside the United States and a short list of fees for changing your plans. The cut-off that matters most is a Thursday: cancel before it and you get your registration fee back minus a small charge; miss it and you do not. What the SAT costs
- SAT registration — US$68.
- Testing outside the US — US$68 plus a US$43 international fee, so US$111 in total for a candidate in India.
College Board's international fees page adds no further international-only charges to that figure.
Fees for changing your plans
- Late registration — US$38.
- Change of test centre — US$34.
- Cancellation — US$34, or US$44 for a late cancellation.
- Waitlist — no charge.
A candidate testing outside the US who registers late therefore pays US$149 before any score service — a third more than registering on time.
Changing rather than cancelling
If you still intend to sit the SAT but need a different test centre, the change fee (US$34) costs the same as a standard cancellation and keeps your registration alive, so you do not pay the registration fee again. Cancelling and refunds
- Cancel by Thursday 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time before test day and you receive the full registration fee back, less the cancellation fee, paid to your original form of payment.
- Refunds are processed beginning three to five business days after you cancel.
- Score reports you ordered with your registration are refundable only if you are absent on test day. Rush score reports cannot be refunded.
Note that the deadline is in US Eastern Time. From India, Thursday 11:59 p.m. ET falls on Friday morning, but do not rely on the margin — cancel by Thursday your time.
Score reports and score services
- Your first four score reports are free if you order them by nine days after the test date.
- Additional score reports — US$15 each.
- Rush reports — US$31.
- Scores by phone — US$15 per call.
- Archived scores — US$35.
- Score verification — US$55.
The nine-day window is the useful one. If you know where you are applying, name those colleges within nine days and you save US$15 on each of the first four.
A realistic budget
- One sitting outside the US, four free reports: US$111.
- Two sittings outside the US, four free reports each time, two extra reports: US$222 + US$30 = US$252.
- Late registration adds US$38 per sitting; a late cancellation costs US$44 of the refund.
Plan the number of sittings in advance and treat each as a full-price attempt.
The mistakes that cost the most
Most of the avoidable SAT spend comes from four decisions, all of them visible in the fee table:
- Registering late. US$38 on top of US$111 — a 34% surcharge for a candidate outside the US, for nothing but timing.
- Cancelling late. The late cancellation fee is US$10 more than the standard one, and after the Thursday deadline there is no refund at all.
- Missing the nine-day window for free reports. Four reports ordered afterwards cost US$60.
- Paying for rush reports you did not need. At US$31 and non-refundable, rush reporting is worth it only when a deadline genuinely requires it; check whether your colleges accept scores in the normal reporting time first.
None of these is about the test itself. Put the registration deadline, the cancellation deadline and the nine-day reporting window in your calendar the day you register.
Before you register
- Check the fee page on the day you register. College Board labels its current table "through December 2026", so a new table may apply to later sittings.
- Register on time — the late fee is more than half the base registration fee.
- Decide your four free score recipients before test day, so you can send them inside the nine-day window.
- Know the Thursday cancellation deadline for your test date.
