GATE EC 2027 Preparation - Syllabus, Sections and Strategy

The GATE 2027 cycle you are preparing for

IIT Madras is the organizing institute for GATE 2027, and the cycle is live right now: the application portal opened on 2 September 2026, regular registration closes on 27 September 2026 (without late fee) and extended registration closes on 5 October 2026 with a late fee. Registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for Indian nationals. The examinations run on 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21 February 2027, with results on 19 March 2027 and city allotment notified on 4 January 2027. The syllabi for the GATE 2027 test papers have been revised, so prepare from the official 2027 PDF linked below rather than an older year's copy. All dates are as published on the official site and liable to change - recheck before acting.

The EC paper in the GATE frame

The paper itself follows the standard GATE frame: 65 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours, computer-based, with General Aptitude contributing 10 questions for 15 marks and the subject component 55 questions for 85 marks across MCQ, MSQ and NAT formats. The summaries below follow the official GATE 2027 EC syllabus PDF (linked at the end). They are orientation, not substitutes - download the PDF and use it as your coverage checklist.

Engineering Mathematics

Linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, complex variables and probability - EC leans on this section harder than most papers because signals and electromagnetics are applied mathematics.

Networks, Signals and Systems

Circuit analysis - nodal and mesh, theorems, transient and steady-state - together with continuous and discrete signals, LTI systems, and the transform toolkit: Laplace, Fourier and z.

Electronic Devices

Energy bands, carrier transport, diodes, BJTs and MOSFETs from the physics upward.

Analog Circuits

Diode circuits, amplifier biasing and small-signal analysis, op-amp circuits and oscillators - the section where practised circuit intuition separates candidates.

Digital Circuits

Number representations, combinational and sequential logic, ADCs and DACs, and microprocessor basics.

Control Systems

System components, block diagrams, time and frequency response, stability - root locus, Bode, Nyquist - and compensators.

Communications

Random processes, analog and digital modulation, information theory basics and noise performance.

Electromagnetics

From Maxwell's equations through transmission lines, waveguides and antennas.

Strategy that is specific to EC

EC is the most mathematically continuous of the core engineering papers: Signals, Control, Communications and Electromagnetics form one connected chain built on transforms, and Engineering Mathematics is that chain's first link, not a side subject. Prepare the chain in order - maths, then signals and networks, then control and communications, with EM running as a steady parallel track - and the later subjects cost half as much effort.

The paper's discrimination usually happens in Analog Circuits and Electromagnetics, the two sections candidates most often postpone. Give analog deliberate, early bench time: bias-point and small-signal questions are pattern-recognisable after enough PYQs but unforgiving without them. EM rewards a formula-and-boundary-conditions notebook maintained from day one. Digital Circuits and Devices, by contrast, are bounded and high-yield - keep them warm with weekly drills rather than long blocks.
